Civic Media MA Practicum Project

As a candidate of Columbia College Chicago’s Civic Media Masters program, this summer, I worked with the youth media non-profit organization True Kids 1 (TK1) located in Taos, NM, to explore the outcomes of their summer media education camp. For this camp, TK1 invited youth ages 9-17 to participate in a summer camp dedicated to collaboratively creating media addressing issues they identify as important. The youth chose from the following media modalities: video production, photojournalism, theater arts, comic book creation, improv, social media activism, and game design. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many groups participated virtually.

With the changes to media education during the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning, TK1 and I wanted to investigate youth engagement, sense of competency in media production, sense of agency, and impact on their community during this camp. The following report outlines the findings of my research exploring these topics through interviews with camp mentors, observations collected during camp meetings, and analysis of student work.
